Montana became a state on November 8, 1889.

During its inception many of its cities competed intensely to be the state capital, the city of Bozeman was one of them and very dear to those that live their.

In time, the city of Helena was named the state capital.

As a consolation, the state legislature agreed to put the state’s land-grant college in Bozeman.

Gallatin County rancher and businessman Nelson Story, Sr. had agreed to donate about 160 acres (650,000 m2) for the site of the state capital.

This land, as well as additional property and monetary contributions, was now turned over to the state for the new college.

Montana State University MSU was founded in 1893 as the Agricultural College of the State of Montana.

It opened on February 16 with five (5) male and three (3) female students.

The first classes were held in rooms in the county high school, and later that year in the shuttered Bozeman Academy (a private preparatory school).

The first students were from Bozeman Academy, and were forced to transfer to the college.

Only two faculty existed on opening day in 1893:  One was Luther Foster, a horticulturist from South Dakota who was also Acting President, and Homer G. Phelps, who taught business.

Within weeks, they were joined by S.M. Emery (who ran the agricultural experiment station) and Benjamin F. Maiden (an English teacher from the former Bozeman Academy).

Augustus M. Ryon, a coal mine owner, was named the first president of the college on April 17, 1893.  Please visit the Montana State Museum for more information on the background of the University.   http://www.montana.edu/msuhistory/early_years.html

Champions from our past…where are the souls of these men today? Are they Japanese Business men? What about Mormon men living in American Samoa …anything is possible …do you believe in reincarnation?  Jesus did and taught you must be born again.  Reincarnation helps us to rid ourselves of our prejudice and God knows how badly white supremacists have affected our attitudes these last years.  – JC Angelcraft …you must be born again.

Residence Hall: Student Life Information and Information for prospective students.

Residence Life at Montana State University operates under the philosophy that residence halls are much different from “dorms.”

“Dorms” are buildings in which people eat and sleep and little else takes place and the term is also related to Greek Fraternal life who used to live in dorms.    This was a problem around the word and in numerous University systems around the world MSU is perhaps one of cleanest and most wholesome and safest place to attend school.

The new catch-all phrase for university-living is now Residence Halls and as such MSU can leave behind any memories of affiliations with Masons or Greek Fraternal life.

The American way now rules at Montana State University with American fellowship christian gatherings and bible studies occurring between students on campus and even residence halls, a phenomena now more prevalent today than it has been in the past when similar activity was the norm.

In the residence halls students meet lifelong friends, and participate in the center of campus life learning valuable social and life skills.

“We want the primary focus of the college experience to be on academic success, but you’ll need more than just classes and studying to make the next four or so years of your life a time to remember.”  MSU.edu
